Envision a beautiful summer night, the perfect night to be on a cruise, the temperature is just right, wind blowing through your hair. Maybe you’re at dinner and a show, or trying your luck at the casino, or simply sitting on the deck enjoying the fresh summer breeze. Either way, you would think to yourself, “There’s no place I’d rather be!”

Yep, its summer time, which also means its summer cruise season! As much fun and as exciting as they are, we know from past incidents that things can go wrong. Ships can break down, fires can happen, and we want to be prepared as much as possible. But if you’re out in the middle of the sea lighting can be limited, especially if something were to happen to the ship’s power. As beautiful as the twinkling of stars can be, their light is not enough for passengers to safely navigate their way through the ship. If hallways are dark and stairwells aren’t clearly marked, passengers could seriously injure themselves. There have been studies that have shown accidents on stairwells are frequently the result of poor design, lighting, or visibility.

Photoluminescent (PL) egress marking systems clearly mark exit paths and doors, making it easy for passengers to follow. PL requires no electricity, it produces sunlight or recycles existing electrical light. Hence, it doesn’t need to rely on any emergency backup systems. PL is very reliable in the event of a crisis. So if a cruise ship should lose power and is left in the dark and/or in smoky conditions, these systems are necessary. A photoluminescent prepared cruise ship can better the chances of its passengers surviving any emergency. This is why photoluminescent egress marking paths are a good idea for cruises.
